Who is Cupid?

Valentine’s Day is creeping up on us and everywhere you look there are signs of it to make sure we don’t forget to pick up a box of candy, a card, or some flowers to say “I love you.” But one of the most prominent symbols of Valentine’s Day is none other than Cupid, most often seen as a half-naked little boy who sports wings and a bow and arrow. What a funny picture of love…

Since I didn’t quite understand how this little guy symbolized “love,” I went online (where else?) to check him out. What I found out was kind of interesting, and very, very involved! Apparently, in Roman mythology, Cupid is the god of erotic love. Hmmm, okay, so I’m getting the love connection here, but I’m still not getting the child-like cherub appearance that we’re so familiar with.

In all the searching I did, I never did find the origin of depicting Cupid as a child, but I did find a fascinating story of Cupid and Psyche, a human woman whom he fell in love with. The story tells of their happy marriage until Psyche’s jealous and meddling sisters caused her to deceive her husband, causing their separation. The story then goes on to tell about the great lengths Psyche goes to in order to be reunited with her love. Talk about a good love story – this one is really well done!
