What's your hobby?

With all the resolutions people were making over the New Year's holiday, I wonder how many included celebrating January's holiday of "National Hobby Month" by resolving to try something new, or to pick up an old hobby that they've abandoned over the years... I have to honestly say I didn't make any resolutions this year, mainly because I never seem to keep them anyway, but also because I was a little distracted by a new baby. But I digress.

National Hobby Month is a great chance to return to something you love or to try something you've always wanted to but never took the time for. I'm amazed at how much hobbies can benefit people. My sister used to complain that she didn't have anything that was "hers," that she had nothing fun to do for herself. With days filled with two young boys, she had no escape for herself. I tried several times to get her involved in various crafting projects - our family has always been pretty "craft" oriented, but she always found an excuse of why not to get involved. I guess she just had to find her own niche.

She finally decided to try her hand at cross stitching. Something I've never really been any good at, but our mom did when she was younger. (Funny that she choose something my mom did. She'd kill me to know that I said she's SO much like my mom that sometimes it's scary...) She really took to it and does a really good job! She even is hoping to build up a stock of finished pieces so she can take part in a local craft show and sell some.

Anyway, part of the point here is that since she's found her chosen hobby, she actually seems to be a little happier. Maybe it's because she's doing something for herself, that she enjoys. I'm not sure really, but there's something about taking time for and taking care of yourself that seems to be a health benefit.

There are SO many things out there that you could pick up as a hobby - crafts, books, music, nature, food/cooking, even things like history, politics, and exercise are just a few areas that offer endless possibilities for hobbies. Take some time out from your routine and give some thought to what you could pick up as a hobby - do something fun for yourself!
