When I first saw this holiday listed, I thought, "well, people celebrate other odd animals, why not the mole?" But I checked into it a little bit and found that the holiday has nothing to do with the ugly little yard-wreckers. Actually, I can't really explain what it's all about - it's a little more advanced than I can remember (if I even studied it at all) in school. Basically, the holiday celebrates a basic measuring unit [called a "mole"]. It equals the atomic mass of a single molecule. This measurement was discovered by an Italian named Amadeo Avogadro.
Since that's about all I can tell you about the holiday, you can check it out further at the National Mole Day Foundation's website, or you could read up on the Amadeo Avogadro himself.
