What the big deal about sewing machines?

September 10th is Sewing Machine Day. Now wait just a minute - before you decide that this holiday isn't relevant to you, that you don't sew, don't care about sewing, etc., please consider what our lives would be like without the invention of the sewing machine. Can you imagine living in a time when the sewing machine was not around? People used to clothe their own families by their own skills - meaning the women of the family had just one more chore to tend to. Not only did you not just go to the store and pick up a new top or dress, but thinks such as blankets and other household items, think curtains, bedspreads, etc. were all a reflection of how well your handiwork was. And I do mean HANDiwork - since all the sewing had to be done by hand!

I have a sewing machine, although I don't really use it like I'd like to. Combine the fact that I have very little free time and the fact that I never paid much attention whenever my grandmother tried to show me things, and it's more for quick and easy projects that any big sewing endeavors. My grandmother on the other hand, now that's a different story. Growing up, she made a lot of our clothes, as we got older, we had our pick of dresses for formals at school, and she made not only my wedding dress, but my bridesmaids dresses also. My mother-in-law also sews, and she made my junior bridesmaid dress, and just recently asked for measurements on my son so she could work on a project for him. She's invested big money in a special machine that will not only sew but do embroidery as well. It's impressive!

So even if you don't sew, you've got to appreciate the invention and how it has made all of our lives a little better! And hey, if you've ever wanted to learn yourself, this is a good reason to take up the hobby! You never know, you might have a hidden seamstress inside you, just waiting to get out!
