Um, Happy "Most Depressing Day of the Year"

Did you know today has been designated as the Most Depressing Day of the Year? Well, it's true. Although I don't feel particularly depressed today. Annoyed at my son, who can be selfish and obnoxioius like every other teen, but not depressed.

One of the biggest reasons for January down in the dumps feelings are the credit card bills that keep rolling in after a lot of big holiday spending. Of course, lousy weather and vicious cold don't help much either. And let's face it, gray skies do tend to lessen the happy factor.

Another reason besides mounting debt is all those pesky New Year's Resolutions made with good intentions, but now have either fallen by the wayside entirely, or are faltering with every passing hour. It is hard to come face to face with your failures, especially when the intentions were honorable. That could depress anyone.

Lastly, the weather also coincides with a lack of exercise. It's so easy to say "it is too cold to run" or "I can't shovel another inch of snow" to get the car out of the driveway. Heck, I'm the excuse queen when it comes to putting exercise aside. But getting some fresh air is actually good for the soul, cold or not. Maybe a walk around the block seems insurmountable when your neighborhood is -4 and covered in mounds of snow. How about mall walking. Oh, stop laughing. It's not all gray-haired ladies at the mall. Plenty of young moms with strollers are out there, too.

If you are depressed, don't ignore the symptoms. Go to the doctor and get some help. But remember, only 3 more months until spring!
