Turn that frown upside down! Smile!

Did you know that this week - the second week in August - is National Smile Week? Wouldn't things be a lot nicer if everyone took the time to practice this week? I know it sounds corny, but you've got to admit you've noticed that the old adage is true - you DO catch more flies with honey than with vinegar! I've had a lot of experience with this, especially lately. Since I now have a little shadow following at my heels 24/7/365, I've had to really watch how I treat others. One of the things I really want to make sure he learns is to be kind to others. Since they learn best by example, what better way to teach him this than to be kind to others myself?

In practicing what I preach, I'm finding that people respond completely differently to me when I smile, and with smiling, being polite and pleasant just come naturally. Smiling while being nasty to someone just doesn't work! I'm pleased to tell you that it is making a difference; my son now waves, smiles, and says thank-you to people when I do. Not always, and not always all three, but the point is, he's learning.

And besides, doesn't it make your day and work more pleasant when you have a smiling, friendly encounter with people instead of the rude, you-know-what attitude you get from others? And who do you want to help more? My point exactly!

So go out and practice smiling today - even if you don't feel like it, a lot of times just the simple act of smiling can turn your own mood around!
