To re-gift or not to re-gift

I’m not really sure when the idea of “re-gifting” came along, I’m sure people have been doing it for years and years, but it seems like just recently the term is everywhere. Maybe it’s because the holiday season has gotten so commercial we feel like it’s necessary to get everyone and their brother a present. If you’re anything like me, that really puts a hurt on your pocketbook, not to mention it makes the holiday a little (lot) more stressful than it needs to be…

Although I think that the idea of re-gifting isn’t horrible, it can be really tacky if you aren’t considerate about it. Karen at Thrifty Mommy gives a “Top 10” list of rules for re-gifting. Her first rule is to never give partially used gift cards – I have NO idea who would think this is okay! That just seems like a no-brainer to me.

I also really agree with rule #5 – to make sure all the evidence (old tape and paper, etc.) is gone off the gift. This kind of goes along with rule #7 – to make sure that what’s in the box is actually what’s on the box. Also, to open it and make sure there’s nothing personal in it. I got a wedding gift once that had a card for the original recipient inside. Although my husband and I found it funny, it could have led to hurt feelings for someone else.

Whether or not you would even consider re-gifting, the fact is that I don’t think the practice is going anywhere. Since we’re all pressed to buy and spend and give, if you do decide to re-gift, save yourself some embarrassment and check out these rules before you do!
