Thrift Shops - some of my favorite shopping!

August 17th is National Thrift Shop Day. I had completely forgotten about this but somehow managed to end up at a local Goodwill. I have to say that around my town, thrift stores get a bad wrap. Sure, a lot of times you'll find worn clothes and junky nick-knacks, but if you take the time to dig through the racks of stuff, you can usually find some neat stuff.

Okay, so maybe that's because we picked up a little red car for $5.50 for her one-year-old. But even still, my sister snagged herself two really cute sundresses and two tank tops that I have to admit I am very jealous that she can wear that I can't. I got a t-shirt (yay), but my real find was a pretty neat toy for my little boy. You remember those wire toys with the beads on them at the doctor's office when you were little? I got one of those for 65 cents that has five different wires and cars, traffic signs and other neat stuff for my son to twist around. wire%20toy.jpg

Oddly enough, I haven't been a frequent visitor of the local thrift stores, but here recently I've been trying to find a dresser for my son's room. Since I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it, I have been making trips to them more and more often. The last time I made the rounds, I found some really cute little girl clothes for a friend's baby shower. (Don't tell where I got them!) There's even a local second-hand store here that gives its proceeds to the American Heart Association. I don't get to check them out too often, but it's run by volunteers who always make the visit fun, even if I don't find anything to take home with me.

Unfortunately, I guess the holiday doesn't get a lot of coverage, since I didn't see anything at the Goodwill to mention this particular holiday. Not to mention I’d never really heard of it before this year. I suppose that since thrift stores in general are usually cheaply priced there's not much cause for additional sales. Regardless of no price slashing, I think I’ll just have to continue my thrifty shopping. This is one holiday I can celebrate year-round!
