The tradition of gifts

Now that my husband and I are starting our own family, we’re having to take a look at what traditions we want to start in our own home. One thing his family did growing up was that they each got to open one gift on Christmas Eve. I used to think that that was just kind of wrong, but I got to thinking about it and realized that my family had been doing this also for as long as I can remember.

Growing up, we would spend Christmas Eve at my grandmother’s. After dinner, we would do presents from the aunts and uncles and my grandmother. Since this usually meant several presents each, I guess this fulfills the opening of a gift on Christmas Eve. So, I guess this is a tradition we’ll keep!

Another tradition that I hope to keep, although my husband isn’t so excited about, is one my mom started when we were little. She would keep several gifts, usually about five, back where we didn’t know. That way, for about a week after Christmas, we would get one gift a day and Christmas wasn’t over all at once. My husband things this is just not fun – he can’t stand to wait to open gifts! Although he finally did agree that if I wanted to continue this tradition I could. I guess we’ll have to see how it goes…
