Thanksgiving parade

My Thanksgiving holiday has started off with a fun morning – we’ve begun the day by watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, followed by the dog show. Yes, I’ll admit it, we’re a TV family. It doesn’t hurt that we’re out of town staying with family and we’re having a Thanksgiving lunch/dinner because my mother-in-law has to work this morning. Since she’s got everything ready to go and has left very detailed instructions to put each item in the oven at specific times, there’s not much left for us to do except entertain ourselves and the baby!

I was a little disappointed with the parade this year – until I realized I was watching it on a different channel than usual. Note to self: next year, be sure to watch the parade on NBC and not CBS. I found that on CBS, the parade coverage seemed to have a lot more commercials, interviews with soap stars, and no footage of the parade performances. (Funny thing is, if you go to the CBS site and check out their message boards, every single post about the parade is bashing CBS for their coverage - guess I wasn't the only one to think it was lousy!)

Regardless, I still watching the parade – it’s typically a lot of fun, but I’d much rather see the floats and marching bands than hear quickie interviews with soap stars. (Forgive me soap fans.) I kept looking behind the people talking and thinking, look, there’s a neat looking float going by – what is it? I want to see it! Talk about that!

hello%20kitty%20balloon.jpg Some of the highlights of the parade this year were: the Jonas Brothers on the Build-a-Bear float – a group I’m probably only familiar with because I keep my TV on either the Cartoon Network or the Disney Channel since I trust their programs to be pretty “okay” for my son to watch. Also, there was the fun Shrek balloon, one of 3 new balloons in the parade this year. He was joined his freshman year by Abby Cadabby, the first female puppet to join the parade in over 10 years, and also by Hello Kitty with her “Supercute” superhero outfit complete with cape and tiara. (I love Hello Kitty! Now I just need a little girl to share the fascination with…) I also got a kick of the M&M’s float where they were dressed as Broadway characters. There was a character from Phantom of the Opera, Spamalot, Wicked, and something else – I have no idea what it was…

Apparently it was gorgeous out there for the parade – beautiful weather for it! 61 degrees makes me wish I could have seen it live. Due to the different channel and coverage, I didn’t get to see the bands play or any of the performances, but I did see plenty of commercials and learned that Belk opens at 5 am, JC Penny opens at 4 am, and various other stores are having “great specials” tomorrow at o-dark-hundred when I’ll probably be arguing with myself about whether or not I’m going to get out of bed to make the trip out with my mother-in-law. (Yes, we are nuts.)

Along with all the trivial CBS provided, they also shared photos of parades past, which was kind of neat. I do have to say that the 1937 Pinocchio float would never “fly” these days, with his obscene looking 43 foot nose! I also found out that I need to set my TV to record Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on Dec 4th and Frosty the Snowman and Frosty Returns on Dec 7trh on CBS. (So see, something good did come of watching the wrong network!)

So now that the parade is over, and we’ve finished watching the dog show (since my little boy loves dogs), we’re all sitting around letting the new member of the family entertain us. Since his uncle-in-law, great-grandmother and great-aunt have never seen him, it’s turning out to be an especially special holiday!
