These holidays get weirder and weirder... Okay, so I'm a few days behind, the official "Take your dog to work day" was actually June 23rd, but considering I've been out of the work force for a few months - well, let's just say I'm a little out of touch. The funny thing about this holiday is that where I used to work, pretty much every day was take your dog to work day. No, I didn't work in a vet's office or anything - actually I worked in a printing office. The office actually has several people who work with St. Francis of Assisi. There were three people who volunteered as puppy parents, or puppy raisers, and they keep the dogs that are in training to be service dogs. As part of their jobs, they work to socialize the puppies and they bring them to work in those work vests that say "Please do not pet me." That is, the dogs wear the vests...
One of the neat things about having the dogs at work is that they make everyone a little happier. The people who keep them at their desks say they have a calming effect, and when they take breaks and walk them around the office to visit people, they make everyone smile! One of the girls works in accounting and she would have her dog deliver our paychecks for us. I'll never forget one day we had an company meeting and in his speech, our President was introducing some new employees. He actually included one of the dogs as a new employee! And when the dog passed his training test and was assigned to his new owner, everyone was so proud!
Now that I'm at home with my son, every day is a day spent with our dog, although somehow it's not quite the same. Anyway, I guess the point would be to appreciate the animals in your life and all they do for you. Sure, my dog makes me crazy when she decides that she needs to be up at 6 in the morning and whines to get me up or when she barks and wakes up the baby. But at the end of the day, I can't beat her loyalty or her undying devotion. Even when I get mad and yell at her she always comes back for a pat on the head or any kind of affection.
So, enjoy your pets and even if you missed (or your job won't let you) take your dog to work day, let them know you love them!
