Tomorrow - Wednesday, September 24th - is See You At the Pole. If you're unfamiliar with this day, it's a day that comes yearly, scheduled on the fourth Wednesday of September each year. It's a day for students to gather together to pray for their schools, communities, country and leaders. It's a student-lead, student-organized event, and is growing steadily each year, despite many protests from those who don't want them to meet.
It's important to note that SYATP "is not a demonstration, political rally, nor a stand for or against anything." The event started with a small group of students in Texas in 1990 and began to spread nation and world wide in 1991. Now, more than 3 million students from all 50 states participate in SYATP. Students in more than 20 countries take part, including places like Canada, Guam, Korea, Japan, Turkey, and the Ivory Coast.
Each year has a "theme" of sorts, this year is "Connect," and their scripture for this year is “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!” 1 Samuel 3:9
I took part in my own school's SYATP events several times in Junior and High School, and it really is an amazing event. One of the neat things now as an adult is driving through town and seeing the students outside before school, meeting over a common goal and with a common purpose. Also, afterwards, people will call into the local radio stations and report the turnout of their schools. If you are planning to take part in the event near you, you can report on it at the SYATP web site here.
If you or your child is participating in the SYATP this year, I'd love to hear about it and how it went!
