Searching for Easter ideas...

As I got off the phone with my mother-in-law this morning, it occurred to me that we don't really have any Easter traditions in our family. (as in my husband and I specifically.) Sure, we always have lunch with family at my grandmothers after church, and my dad always buys all of his girls a corsage to wear to church, but that's about it. I remember growing up we always went to my granny's a few days before and dyed eggs and made a bunny cake and sometimes she would make a cake and put a coconut flake "nest" on top - dyed green of course - and put jelly beans in it for eggs. We'd hunt eggs on Easter and each of the grandkids would search diligently for the "lucky egg" in hopes of winning the $1.00 prize from my paw paw.

Now, as we have grown up, my cousins continue the tradition of hunting eggs, and we still get together and eat, but what else do are we doing to make special memories to separate one Easter from the next? Especially now that I have a son, my mother-in-law mentioned that since she didn't know how we wanted to "do" Easter she hadn't really gotten Seth anything for Easter. I was quick to let her know that I don't have any problem with the "Easter bunny" or "Easter baskets," but we don't intend to make the holiday all about the candy - or tell our kids that the Easter bunny is real. I want to make sure that we raise our kids to understand the importance of the day as a celebration of a Holy day when Christ rose from the dead. But that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the fun, kid-stuff for the holiday.

So, just days away from Easter, I'm trying to decide what we can do to make this year different. Make a memory that will last. And, hopefully, start a tradition that will carry us through many years to come. While searching online (today's parent's best friend!) I came across the website Kaboose. How I never came across this site before is beyond me, it looks like a really great parenting resource. They have an entire section devoted to "Easter 2008" and I haven't even begun to exhaust the ideas they have there.

They offer Easter crafts, help in planning an egg hunt, recipes, and even Easter and Passover videos. And that's just the beginning! Word puzzles, mazes, color pages, bunny bingo, and expert egg decorating advice - the list goes on and on. Maybe I'll be able to find something here that will strike me as something that would fit our family as a new tradition. It's kind of funny, I've been so attached to my old family traditions from when I was little that it really didn't occur to me that I'd have to start making my own traditions eventually...
