Ready to stay home with the kids?

Did you know that the third Monday in August was Stay at Home With Your Kids Day? Guess I've got that one covered, considering I'm a work-at-home mom! What a neat holiday! There's so much controversy about the issue of whether or not to stay at home. People either wish they could do so, or they look down on those who do. I heard another stay-at-home mom say the other day that they had just read an article that said that men were starting to not want their wives to stay home. Instead, they would rather have a wife making a big salary to match their own. I wonder where they got their information, but it sounds a little skewed to me...

However, I think the trend is leaning more and more to those who wish they could stay home. I can't tell you how many people have told me that they wished they could do what I have and be at home with their kids. Often the decision is not an easy one. The sad thing is that so many who do stay at home feel guilty that they aren't contributing - at least financially - to the family. They don't realize how much they are doing for their family for being there for them. People, often including themselves, also take for granted all that they've given up to stay at home - although any sacrifice is worth it in the end.

Don't get me wrong, my son frustrates me sometimes, and I often get weary of being at the beck and call of a toddler, dealing with tantrums and the never-ending guessing game of what the new "grunt" means because he's just learning to talk. But I wouldn't change it for the world.

I can't think of a better way to spend a vacation day than with your family. I know of too man people who take a day off to run errands and get stuff done around the house, which is all great, but isn't there a poem that says something about how "dust and cobwebs will keep, but kids grow up so fast.." or something like that? It's so true; I see it daily as I watch my son change every day. I can't believe that 19 months has gone by so quickly.

So, if you can, try to take the time to celebrate this holiday. Even if you can't get off on the third Monday of August, make a point to take some time off just to be with our kids. I promise it will be worth it!

Oh, and by the way, anyone who thinks that stay-at-home parents don't work, and that it's an easy job, you've got a few things to learn!
