Office celebrations

Ah, it’s that time of year again – time for everyone at the office to be fighting over who gets to take off and who will cover for who while people are out of town for Christmas. As unpleasant as office politics can get, I still enjoy the holidays at the office. Although I’d much rather be taking my time getting ready instead of rushing out on my lunch break and after work to fit everything in, it’s still fun to see everyone get into the “Christmas mood.”

People decorate their cubicles, they put a tree up in the front lobby, the receptionist now answers the phone “Happy Holidays from XYZ, how may I direct your call?” We’ve just finished our ornament exchange, and we’re planning our office breakfast and lunch. (We have two, a breakfast where the customer service people bring food in to say thanks to the production crew, and a lunch where everyone brings in food.)

Although I have no idea what I’m going to contribute this year, I’m still looking forward to it! There’s just something about eating together that can bring a company together… Maybe we’re all full and in a good mood. Who knows, but whatever the reason, it’s fun, and I’m glad it’s become an office tradition!

Also, tonight is our annual office Christmas party. That should be fun, we’ll have everyone dressed up and ready to party. They have a live band scheduled to play, and the dinner is being hosted by a really nice, upscale local hotel. As far as I know, this is the first year that they’ve had the party there, and I think we’re expecting a better than normal turnout due to the location alone! One year, and I hate that I missed it; they had the party at a really nice local resort. All the employees were invited to stay overnight for a greatly reduced price. (There was the added celebration of the retirement of the owner of the company that made that Christmas extra-special.)

Last year, my husband’s office party was the same night as mine, and since he’s a “somebody” at his office and I’m a “nobody” at mine, we hit his first and then caught the tail end of mine. Unfortunately we had missed all the “good stuff” at mine – like one of the employees dressing up as Santa and having the President of the company sit on his lap! They also gave him tin cans with a string tied between them to communicate with people because he’s notoriously bad with email communications… Too funny! I really hate that I missed seeing that.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, though, from stories I’ve heard as well as pretty much any article your read online about office party do’s and don’ts is to be careful about your alcohol consumption. Apparently there were plenty of other “somethings” I missed seeing at the parties I didn’t make it to, but believe me, there sure was talk going around for days after! Well, at least they weren’t talking about me…
