Nothing like Free Stuff for Earth Day

This Sunday, April 22nd, is Earth Day.

In our family, green is good. We're not particularly earthy crunchy people. Nope, we're cheap. Frugal. We live in New England, land of the tightwads. So saving electricity is a hobby of mine. I've replaced every single light bulb in our house with compact flourescents. Savings? About 50% off my former riduculous electric bill. Plus, the lighting is just fine, and the bulbs last forever.

We have all our appliances with digital displays on switches so we do not leave the displays on during the night or when the appliance isn't used. Have an ipod? Unplug that recharger unless you're actually using it. It's a huge energy drain. Use a desktop? Another big energy drain. Get a laptop for your next computer. Spend a little more, save a lot in the long term.

Do you recycle? We recycle about 50% of our garbage. Our city has weekly pickup of glass, cans, paper, cardboard, wood, and plastics. We don't even have to sort them!

In the US, we have energy star ratings on all applicances. I don't own anything that doesn't have an energy star.

Did you know that every time you brush your teeth and leave the water on, you waste up to 8 gallons of clean water. Gone down the drain. So turn the water off when you brush. Ditto for washing your dishes. Instead of washing them with the water running, fill the sink with soap bubbles, wash them, and then rinse in a dishpan of clear water. Big savings there.

As for the free stuff, if you live in the US, Home Depot is giving away a compact flourescent bulb to every customer. No purchase required. So hurry down to the huge orange box and pick up a free bulb.

Happy Earth Day, and don't forget to Go Green!
