Necco Valentines Hearts

Necco Corporation (stands for New England Confectionary Company) announced the 2007 Sweetheart conversation candy hearts sayings today. Every year Necco produces billions of candy converstation hearts with messages on them. The taste, well, some people love them, some people think they're vile. I happen to love the white ones, but really could take or leave the other colors. Fortunately my kids like all the colors and will eat the other ones, leaving me with the white hearts.

This year's theme is pets. The new hearts say things like "Top Dog, Go Fish, and Purrfect". This does not mean that you can feed these sugary treats to your pets, however! These hearts are only for human ingestion.

Years ago, I used to work on the same street as the old Necco factory in Cambridge MA, right across the street from MIT. Not only was this a great place to walk by, especially when they were making the root beer barrels, which made the entire neighborhood smell like a root beer float, but they also had a candy store that sold seconds to all the MIT kids and people working in the neighborhood. Many times I walked over at lunchtime to invest in a bag of candy for my desk, but the best time of year was when the conversation hearts were released. The seconds had the imprinting crooked or falling off the side, making for some very funny conversation hearts. They were popular with everyone in the neighborhood. Alas, that factory closed down a few years back, although they are still manufactured in the Boston area.
