Parents everywhere rejoice! This Thursday, May 10th, is Clean Up Your Room Day! Okay, yeah, I agree, as parents we shouldn’t have to have a special day for our kids to clean their rooms, but considering how hard it can be, maybe it’s a good thing. I know that kids learn by example, so I sure am in trouble! I try to keep my house clean, but between my crazy non-schedule with a newborn and my husband’s lack of housekeeping habits, well, let’s just say that my house is far from clean. Not to mention that my parents aren’t the picture of good housekeeping either. Guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
The problem with my house being messy is that I really want a clean house! I actually enjoy cleaning – yeah, I know I’m weird. There’s just something about looking around and seeing what you’ve accomplished. It’s nice. I guess part of my problem is that during the day I’ve gotten hooked on shows like Clean Sweep and Mission Organization. They’re addictive! I just want to get into our stuff and clean it all out – get rid of the stuff we don’t use and make room to live in our house so we’re not tripping over stuff and cramming stuff into every possible storage space.
I suppose that with the addition of kids to our household it will only get worse. I keep trying to prompt my husband into cleaning-gear with the reminder that kids repeat what they see and they will copy his habits of tossing clothes on the floor, but so far no success. I try not to be a nag, but I guess it’s a good skill to have as a mom. Who knows?
I guess the good news is that our house isn’t gross. It’s not like we’ve got week-old pizza crusts under the couch or sneakers that are stinking up the bedroom. We’re more cluttered than messy, but really, when it comes down to it, what’s the difference? Anyway, I guess this is one weird holiday to mark on my calendar so if nothing else works, I can fall back on this day to ensure my kids clean their rooms – at least once a year… (yeah, for all you experienced parents, don’t laugh. I’ll figure it out on my own!)
