This weekend we're celebrating Memorial Day. Sadly, it seems that most of us tend to forget to celebrate the men and women that have and are serving our country and it's mainly a holiday of barbques and picinics. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I think it's also important to remember the reason for the holiday. Since none of my immediate family was in the service, it's easy for my family to let the holiday pass by without giving it much thought. For my parents, it was a little bit different. Both of my grandfathers served in the military, but even that seems to have almost disappeared from our memories as they have both passed away.
My husband's family, on the other hand, is a little different. Both my husband's father and step-father served in the military, and he was even born on a military base. He wanted to fly fighter jets but couldn't due to his eyesight not being perfect, so his own career in the military was over before it began. But, in typical style of a broken family, being shuttled back and forth between the two parents, some of the connections were lost over the years, and unfortunately we don't get to see either set of his parents often. So, again, our connection that would keep us in touch with his family's military background is somewhat muted.
I hope my children never have to see a time when they are called to battle, but if that day comes, I hope that they receive the honor and appreciation due to those who serve our country so bravely. I know that if my children choose on their own to serve, that I will be extremely proud of them, even as I worry for their safety. I cannot begin to imagine the sacrifices the service men and women have made for us all, or the sacrifices of their families.
This year, as we enjoy our cookouts, our picnics, the Memorial Day sales, and especially our long weekend, don't forget to give some time to remember and appreciate those who have given their time, talents, families and sometimes even their lives.
Happy Memorial Day weekend - I hope yours is wonderful!
