Mele Kalikimaka-How to host a traditional Hawaiian Christmas!

images.jpg It's about this time of year when my thoughts turn not to holiday turkey, brightly wrapped gifts or sipping eggnog around the fireplace. Sure, I love all of these things but living up here in, cool-as-ice Canada, one often wonders what a traditional Christmas celebration is like in a place where the sun is always shining and the surf is always up; Hawaii!! If you're a displaced surf-bunny like me or just want to know how to celebrate the holidays "Hawaiian style" please read on for some hula-yuletide tips:

-Plan your luau early and invite just about everyone you can think of! In Hawaii the holidays are about sharing with everyone you know instead of just close family. Don't forget to pick up tons of gifts as Hawaiian's are notoriously generous around the holidays as well!

-The Christmas Luau is a casual dinner so make sure you don your favorite Hawaiian shirt and shorts! You can make traditional holidays leis by sewing together tiny buds of the Polynesian Poinsettia flower.

-Bake traditional holidays treats such as Coconut Pudding and wait for Menehune Santa to arrive with presents in his Christmas tree boat, or red canoe (his elves are said to paddle the boat to shore).

-Play some tunes on your Ukulele (uh...okay) or simply throw some Don Ho holiday tunes on the hi-fi and you're ready to have yourself a perfectly Polynesian Christmas celebration! Or you could do what my family does; eat some turkey, open some gifts and watch Bing Crosby croon out "White Christmas" on the tube. However you choose to celebrate that special day have a wonderfully, joyous time!
