May 1st

Today is May 1st, also known as May Day. I was planning to write a post on May Day, but as I got into my "research" about the holiday, I decided that it was a little more complicated than I wanted to get at this hour. Other than the fact that it's officially the first day of summer (weird - the year is flying by), and something about it being labor holiday, I just couldn't get too interested in it. However, I did also find out that not only is today May Day, but it's also Mother Goose Day! Much better!

mother%20goose.jpg Maybe since I'm a new mom, everything seems to be about kids stuff. I went to a company yard sale the other weekend and found that instead of my usual browsing I targeted baby clothes and toys... Anyway, Mother Goose Day sounded pretty interesting, and especially relevant to my specific place in life, so I checked it out.

As much as we all know and probably grew up with Mother Goose, she was never an actual person. She's been credited with various rhymes and stories over the years and is a child's favorite storyteller. She has taught us morales; she was some of the first stories we learned to read and some of the first songs we learned to sing.

So, whether you have kids or not, remember your own childhood and take a stroll down memory lane to celebrate good old Mother Goose and the part she played in our lives. Me, I'll have to dust off my collection of her stories and rhymes so I can read them to my son. It's such a joy to share things from my childhood with him, even if he is still too young to be able to understand...
