Wow, this weekend is really taking on a life of it's own. Not only is it my son's first birthday, but we've got family coming in from out of town (for the said birthday), Groundhog Day is February 2nd (this Saturday), and then the Superbowl is February 3rd, this Sunday. I'm hoping that it will somehow get forgotten in all the birthday maddness since I'm not a football kind of person. With out of town relatives, I'm sure at least part of the day will be spent saying goodbye as they pack up and leave - but since they always hit the road around noon, I'm sure that will leave my husband plenty of time to locate the game and take over our living room. Sigh...
With Groundhog Day, I'm afraid that since we don't live in Pennsylvania to celebrate with Punxsutawney Phil, it's just never been a big deal for us. Also, I like winter (minus the whole being cold), so even if the little rodent does predict six more weeks of winter, it's no skin off my nose! Either way, with a birthday party for a one-year-old to oversee, I'll be lucky if I even remember it is Groundhog Day!
What's the deal with planning parties for kids that young anyway? I know, I know, it's more for us parents than it is for them, and there's something to be said for actually encouraging them to play with their food. How strange is that? Our kids probably think we're nuts - we fuss at them every other time the "play" with their food, but here for some reason we laugh and take pictures when they smear their birthday cake all over themselves. It's like some alien parental rite of passage - we get such joy out of it, and our kids don't have the slightest clue what's going on.
One thing that's going to be interesting is this will be our son's first sugary food. I'm glad the party is midday so he'll have plenty of time to play all the sugar out of his system! Don't get me wrong, we've not gone overboard or anything - we didn't hire a petting zoo or a magician or anything like that. Like I said, I'm realistic enough to know that he'll never remember this weekend, and he's more likely to be overwhelmed by too much commotion than excited by it. We're just having a few family and friends to my family's church for snacks and visiting time. We will have the ritualistic cake for him to play in, but other than that, there are no activities or games planned - besides, what would I do for a one-year-old anyway? Almost all of his friends are the same age, which means no one would be able to play games or participate in most things. So, as far as parties go, I'm afraid this one is going to be kind of lame - but at least the adults should enjoy the time to let the kids run around so they can visit! Maybe I should call it a play-date instead!
Well, people, I hope you enjoy your weekend full of fun - may it be as exciting and exhausting as mine! And, if you're a football fan, I hope the Superbowl is awesome and your team wins!
