Or, is was anyway. One of our new traditions is to celebrate our birthdays with some close family friends. I grew up with a brother and sister - he was a year older than me and she was a year older than my sister. Our parents grew up together, so needless to say we were really close. Over the years we have all grown up and gone our separate ways, but we all came back to the area. Now, we all have our own families and kids. But, we still get together and have dinner every Sunday night.
One of the things we do is have a special dinner for each of us as it comes around to our birthdays. Thanks to one of the kids, we call it each person's "Happy," forget the birthday part! It's not anything really fancy, but that person gets to choose what they want to eat (within reason since they're feeding 5 couples and their kids). We don't usually do gifts, but it's still a lot of fun. The oddest thing about our birthday celebrations is the "traditional" singing of "Happy Birthday." One of the girls suggested it and for some strange reason it stuck - but when we sing "Happy Birthday" we purposely sing it badly - and I mean really, really badly. I'm not sure why she suggested this, considering she has a really good voice herself, but apprently it's something her family does.
We always joke that our kids are going to be confused when they go to their friends parties and they hear "Happy Birthday" sang correctly!
So, even though my "Happy" has past, we didn't get to celebrate it because some of the kids were sick. But this weekend, however, will be my turn. This year, for my birthday gift, maybe I can convince them not to sing!
