I can't believe I'm so excited! My family has never done Halloween up really big. Oh yeah, growing up we would go trick-or-treating and everything, but that was about it. There were no decorations at our house, and we lived so far off the road that we never got trick-or-treaters at our house. But for some reason, now that I've got a little one to dress up myself, it just seems like a lot more fun - and a bigger deal than I remembered!
I hadn't planned to take my little boy out anywhere this year. I mean, he's only 9 months old, and he won't be eating any candy. And, I know what you're thinking - I promise I'm not taking him out to get the candy for myself! As much as I love candy, this isn't really about the candy! (Besides, while not officially on a "diet," I am trying to watch what I eat - I have a wedding to go to in December...)
But as the day approached, my sister began asking me what we - meaning my son and I was supposed to go out with her and her boys - were doing for Halloween. I figured it would be fun to see her boys (almost 4 and almost 2) out in their costume, so I decided what the heck. The thing that makes it even more fun is that she is going to dress up as well. Okay, so maybe there's a little sibling rivalry, so when she asked what I was going to dress up as, my first response was to bite my tounge that I was NOT going to put on a costume. So I thought about it, and you know, why shouldn't adults have fun and enjoy the one time a year that you can get all dressed up in something completely off the wall and no one thinks there's anything weird about it?
So, I picked out this really cute (that was my first mistake!) costume at Wal-mart (my second mistake) and took it home. It was a "Sugar Plum fairy" costume - complete with wings and everything. Absolutely adorable. However, for some reason I continue to delude myself that I've lost most of my "baby-weight" and will fit into things that I have no business being in in the first place!
Anyway, my last mistake was trying it on and showing it to my husband who promptly told me I couldn't wear it out of the house! Whether he was trying to save me the embarrassment I surely would have encountered or if he really and truly thought it was too risque to wear out, I can't be sure... But whatever the real reason, I'm suddenly without a costume for tonight. And somehow that makes me a little sad.
So, here I sit, trying to come up with some idea of what I can throw together that won't take too much time or effort! My son is going out dressed as the cutest dianosaur that you've ever seen - it's a hand-me-down costume from my nephew that my grandmother made him for his first Halloween. If I wasn't such a chicken - and such a cold-natured person, I could wear the costume my sister wore to match. She dressed up as a cave-woman, complete with the great big "pebble" necklace Wilma Flintsone made so famous. It was cute.
We have a full day planned, so I've got to think fast. I have a personal errand to run before noon, then my sister is coming over with her two boys. From there we're going to run them over to my old office and show them off and maybe catch lunch. We've got time to kill between then and 5:30, but then we're off to a local church for their "trunk-or-treat." After we've exhausted ourselves there, we're off to the local mall for their festivities. And, we'll be joined by our spouses, my parents, and my brother-in-law's mother. Talk about a crazy night! Oh well, who knows, it will come together in the end. And even if I have to go dressed as a stay-at-home mommy, it will be a night to remember!
