International Women's Day

This holiday makes me think of a book I just recently read. I actually purchased it because it looked interesting and I thought a girlfriend of mine might like it for Christmas. I thought I'd take a peak at it myself before I gave it to her, and I ended up reading it all the way through. The book was called Wild Women: Crusaders, Curmudgeons, and Completely Corsetless Ladies in the Otherwise Virtuous Victorian Era (yeah, I know - seriously long title) by Autumn Stephens. The book was basically just snapshot looks at different women throughout history who had defied the conventional role assigned to women to be meek and demure. I have to say I was disappointed that the women mentioned in the book were known mostly for their sexual deviance instead of anything else... with so many brilliant women who helped make strides for womankind as well as humankind, it seemed like there was a lot lacking. Regardless, it was an interesting look at what women have overcome - things like the simple right to wear pants that were denied women for years. Or the fact that a woman *gasp* actually speaking her mind about something, or not fainting at the appropriate moment to show how appalled they were at certain topics being discussed around them... HA!

Truly though, the focus of this holiday is "upon women workers, and advancing women's rights in the workforce, politics and society." So, sure, who really wants to get up and go to work every day? But that's not the point. This holiday celebrates how far we've come and the rights we now have that we didn't have before. so celebrate! And teach your daughters, nieces, granddaughters and girlfriends to celebrate as well!
