Independance Day Celebrations

I live right outside the rather large American city of Boston, which is known for it's July 4th celebrations. There is a huge concert on the Esplanade, put on by the famous Boston Pops Orchestra, and a fireworks display that is breathtakingly beautiful and awe inpiring year after year. The Pops plays patriotic songs, then guest stars entertain, there are cannons and artillery, and then kaboom! Fireworks. There are also between 1/2 and 3/4 of a million people squished into a small park and along the river. Which means that you have to get there really early and stake out your place and use the portapottys.

Or, you can do what my family does. We go to our local fireworks display, which is much less crowded, has real bathrooms, excellent truck food, and wonderful entertainment. A band called The Zaichick Brothers, which has to be the best pickup band in the world, plays live music for two long sets. The bravest folks from town get up front and dance along. There are kiddie rides to entertain the smaller kids, and amazing food trucks to feed the masses. The best part? You get to see your entire town all in one place, and everyone is in a great mood. Plus, our fireworks are very very good. They might not be as good as Bostons, but they're damn good!

Last year we went with family friends. I made a barbeque brisket, some coleslaw, potato salad, and cookies for dessert. The brisket was the best thing I've ever made in my life, and we're going to repeat it again this year!

My kids love to wander around the crowd and see all their friends from school that aren't in camp. We're always entertained by the students from the Boston Ballet School, located in our city, who come in droves in matching T-shirts and tons of energy. They take over the dance floor and are a lot of fun to watch. By the time it gets dark, everyone is pumped to watch the fireworks that are shot off over our town pool.

It's a wonderful evening that feels like small town America, just a few scant miles from Downtown Boston.

The best part? Our fireworks are always over before Boston's start, so we can rush up to a bridge nearby and see Boston's from a distance. It's a twofer that is guaranteed to have you ooooing and aaaaaing.
