Inauguration Day

Wow, it's here. Today is Inauguration Day and President George Bush has given his farewell address and is leaving the Oval Office and President Elect Barak Obama will no longer be "president elect" but will take his place as the newest President of the United States.

Whether you agree with the nation's decision to elect him as our newest president or not, one cannot deny that today is a monumental occasion. If for no other reason, being the first African American to be elected as President is no small thing. For that matter, any man (or woman) elected to this prestigious position is more than an honor. The office itself is worth respect, and therefore I hope and pray that the country will support the President - because he IS the President; he is the leader of our free country. The weight of responsibility that now rests on his shoulders is one that not many could bear, and he will need our prayers and support.

There will be many parties and celebrations today, as well as many protests I'm sure. Regardless, I hope that everyone is able to enjoy a peaceful day and remember the many things that make our country great. Our freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, our electoral process, our right to bear arms, the list goes on and on. All these things and more are worth fighting for, worth standing up for, worth believing in and protecting.

Today and in the days to come, pray for, support, encourage, and if you can, get involved in our government and with the people in office. They represent us - the people - and we need to make sure we don't take our freedoms for granted, or expect everyone else to fix our problems for us while we stand idly by.

So celebrate today - even if you didn't vote for him - and celebrate the United States. Happy Inauguration Day!
