Holidays for Monday the 6th

I wasn't really sure what the "Come and Take It" holiday was all about, so I had to look into it little further. It didn't sound quite right to me... Seems like it's an odd way to say Carpe diem or Seize the day. (So, don't mistake the holiday for a free reign to go and "take" stuff!) I'm all for this kind of holiday - pair that with the next holiday devoted to silliness, and we've got a neat combination of thins to celebrate!

mad-hatter-1.jpg The Mad Hatter Day is a day to celebrate silliness. Sounds good to me! The Mad Hatter, if you don't remember, is from Alice in Wonderland. His characteristic top hat bore a tag that read 10/6 - thus the holiday being today! (Originally, the 10/6 meant "ten shillings and six pence, the price of the hat.") Interestingly enough, historically, "mercury was used in the process of curing felt used in some hats. It was impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hat making process. Hatters and mill workers often suffered mercury poisoning as residual mercury vapor caused neurological damage including confused speech and distorted vision. It was not unusual then for hatters to appear disturbed or mentally confused, many died early as a result of mercury poisoning."

The last thing to celebrate today is Physician's Assistant Day - which is pretty self-explanatory. I've seen various PA's over the year, especially when I just needed to be seen at the doctor's office without much fuss and didn't want to wait to see a doctor. Some people are strictly "doctor-only" patients, but don't give the PA's the short end of the stick.
