Holiday Stressbusters

We all have stress. It's an unavoidable part of life. Oddly enough, if you believe what the "experts" say, it's even somewhat of a necessary part of life. (My response to that is "WHAT?!?") Okay, so maybe they have a point, but there's no doubt that more often than not, the stress in our lives is not the good kind. And around the holidays, that stress level can really come to a peak. Odd, considering how holidays are supposed to be a joyous time full of fun and laughter...

However, there are ways to combat the stress during the holidays, and as I was browsing online the other day, I came across an interview with Dr. Carl Ivey, a parenting coach from Campbell River. He gives a short list to help us all take care of ourselves a little better during the holidays and all year long. I've summed up his list below.

1. Treat yourself well. He explains that while this may seem a little self-centered, we really need to take care of ourselves, because chances are, no one else is going to.

2. Get enough sleep. Most of us are functioning with only a half-charged battery. That can't be good for anyone.

3. Eat healthy. Fast food anyone? Sure it's easy, but it's sabotaging our attempts at streamlining the rest of our lives by adding extra weight and taking away precious nutrients, making us more prone to illness. Being sick does not equal a stress-free life.

4. Be organized. (As much as possible, anyway!) This includes being organized with your time.

5. Learn to discipline your kids. This is a hard one, but it makes sense when you think about the stress misbehaving children and the result of having to punish or fuss at them brings.

Check out the full article for more information, but even if you don't have the time, as many of us don't, take his tips to heart. Make a point to take the holidays under control and actually enjoy them, without as much stress!
