With Hanukkah over, our family seems to be in a bit of a funk. One of my kids is sick and has spent the last 3 days moaning about the end of the world. The other is driving us all crazy begging to go shopping to spend his many gift cards. Every time he asks I tell him that there is no way in hell I would brave the malls right before Christmas, nor will I be going the day afterward.
There is no more special food, no cookies and candy to munch on, no presents to unwrap... the holiday is over. On to New Years, I say. But this year there is a tangible let down as the end of Hanukkah comes right before the big Christmas buildup. When Hanukkah is early, as it is next year, we finish well before Christmas, so the kids have school vacation to look forward to. When Hanukkah is late, well then we have all the after Christmas sales to look forward to. That is actually my favorite scenario, although the children absolutely hate it when Hanukkah starts after Christmas. They don't yet understand the subtile nature of the apres Christmas sale, I guess.
Me, I'm relieved it is over and done with. The company, the noise, the sighs of disappointment when the presents isn't exactly what some spoiled brat um, delightful child expected. The bickering over what game to play. The food, oh lordy the excess food and excess poundage on my butt. Nope, I'm glad it is over with and my relationship with Canola oil can relax until next year.
We're still deciding what movie to see on Christmas day, and my daughter has announced that she really doesn't want Chinese food this year, evidentally not getting that the reason Jews eat Chinese food on Christmas is that they are the only restaurants open. But we'll all get it together by Monday, and then all we have to do all week is shop at a million different stores to spend spend spend those gift cards.
Why can't kids keep a gift card for more than a week without going insane?
