Happy Winnie the Pooh Day!

classic%20winnie-the-pooh.gifHow awesome is today’s holiday? January 18th is Winnie the Pooh Day! January 18th, 1882, A.A. Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh and friends, was born. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you how popular Winnie the Pooh has become over the years, and as a favorite childhood character, many of us grew up with him. For that matter, many of our parents and many of our own kids will continue to grow up with him.

There’s just something timeless about the “silly old bear” that keeps generation after generation coming back to him throughout our growing-up years. Although Pooh was created by A.A. Milne, his appearance was crafted by illustrator E.H. Shepard. Over the years, Pooh’s image has changed a little, but he’s still the same, loveable bear. Disney’s animated features, starting in 1966, have pushed him into the spotlight, and he’s been a fan favorite ever since.

Winniethepooh.jpg Winnie the Pooh got his name from a real bear at the London Zoo named Winnipeg, who was known for her gentle nature and playfulness. The “Pooh” part of his name came also from a real animal, a swan that Milne met with his grandson Christopher while on a holiday. Obviously, Pooh’s dear friend Christopher Robin was named for A.A. Milne’s grandson.

So, however you choose to celebrate it, don’t forget Winnie the Pooh Day!

On a side-note, for us die-hard Pooh fans, did you know that the sport of “Poosticks” (you do remember this one, right?) has actually become a real game? There is a World Championship Poohsticks race that takes place in Oxforshire each year!

Also, did you know that Pooh has his own Hollywood Walk of Fame star? He was awarded it on April 11, 2006 and it’s at 6834 Hollywood Blvd. How’s that for a famous bear?
