Whether you celebrate with green beer or green pancakes and milk (it's a family thing), don't forget your "green" tomorrow! Unless you like getting pinched - not really sure where that tradition got started...
I have to admit, I really don’t know much about the history of St. Patrick’s Day, and I certainly don’t know much about St. Patrick himself. I did read a little bit about him online, and other than skimming that he started out a pagan and was sold into slavery, I still couldn’t tell you much about him. But, I guess one of the great things about how we’ve commercialized holidays is that you really don’t need to know the background to celebrate!
There’s the traditional greeting cards for St. Patrick’s day, along with carnations dyed green – I saw those at the grocery store just today – and of course, the green beer. Also, don’t forget the parades! I’ll never forget attending the parade in New York City one year. I was on a school trip, and had completely forgotten that it was St. Patrick’s Day. We were touring the city, and it was crazy how the cops were out in force. I don’t remember where we were trying to go, but getting through the crowds was almost impossible. I remember so clearly this one woman who had two iguanas (I guess they were the green items on her outfit) – they were both on some kind of leash and one was perched on her shoulder and one on her hat. Weird…
Anyway, I won’t be attending any parade this year since its a little wet and cold (I’m a wimp, and I have the great excuse of not wanting to take a baby out in the weather). However, I do hope to celebrate with the green pancakes and milk. I figure adding a little food color to an otherwise ordinary meal is easy enough, and it sure will spice up breakfast! Besides, my 3-year-old nephew should get a kick out of it. Luckily, I don’t think he’s old enough to know about the pinching tradition because I think he’d care if you were actually wearing green or not!
