I hope all you dad's out there had a great Father's Day! (And I hope all you mom's and kids out there remembered to make a big deal about it!) Today was kind of normal at our household. We're not the world's best about celebrating holidays on time - we usually celebrate a few days behind, as if we didn't have ample warning that the holiday was coming! For example, for Mother's Day, we planned to go out to eat, but never did. However, a week or so later, my husband pulled into our driveway in a Honda Odyssey van and wished me a belated "Happy Mother's Day." That was some surprise!
I searched everywhere this week for a gift for my husband for Father's Day, but was unsuccessful. I had in mind what I wanted - a photo frame for a 4x6 size picture. I really wanted one that had the scripture "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6" on it, but oddly enough I couldn't find one. I have the perfect picture of my husband kneeling down with with our son in his arms, standing together and both looking in the same direction. I suppose we'll continue our tradition of celebrating late and I'll have to keep looking for the perfect frame.
We did celebrate with the traditional dinner out, and fortunately for us, we actually ran into my parents while we were out and about, so we were able to celebrate with my father as well. Although they disputed it greatly, we were able to cover their dinner bill as well. It was a good time out, and I was glad to have more family there. Also, when we got home, we made the traditional phone calls to my husband's father and step-father who are both out of state. Although the calls came late, they were still much appreciated, although we really shouldn't wait until holidays to call!
I'm hoping that as the years go by and my son gets older, planning and actually carrying through with plans for holidays are a little easier to handle, but until then we're still working on setting up our own special holiday traditions. One we decided to start is to make a point to get a father/child photo on Father's Day (and the same thing on Mother's Day). I'm also looking forward to when my son is old enough to do things like color pictures and make cards for holidays. Until then, just spending time with family on the special holidays is enough!
