You know, as much as I wouldn't trade my life for anything, it still makes me sad that as my sister and I have grown up over the years, our family traditions have changed just as much as we have. Now that we're both married, not to mention mothers, it's hard to get our own family schedules to match up enough to carry on our usual traditions. We try though.
It seems that our 4th of July traditions changed over the years when we were kids. For a few years, we would go to the local Hills store. We would go in and buy snacks, then just as the store was closing we would go sit out in the parking lot in our family van and watch the fireworks show the store put on.
Of course, with the expense, they eventually quit the fireworks, so we resorted to one of two things. Sometimes we would go with our parents to my grandparent's place on the lake for a cook out. We would go fishing and swimming, we'd eat until we were stuffed, then run around in the hot sun until it got dark. We would usually have fireworks of our own to set off.
As my sister and I got even older, my parents would take us to the local fair. (And of course, once we started driving, we would take ourselves...) Now I find out that even our local fair doesn't have fireworks. How sad. They used to do fireworks for a day before and a day after the 4th. Now there's only one place in town that you can go to see them.
I don't know that my husband will make the trip out to see the fireworks - especially with a 5-month-old in tow, but I'm still hoping that we can get together with my parents and maybe my sister and her family for a cook-out. We've got a few fireworks that we can set off ourselves at the house. (Only problem with that is that I'm always a big chicken and am worried that we'll set something on fire...) Oh well, whatever we do, as long as we can enjoy being together, that's all that matters!
I hope everyone has a great time this year on the 4th! Happy Independence Day!
