Doesn't have quite the same ring as Christmas is coming, does it?

But the truth is, Hanukkah is two weeks away and it's coming at us fast and furious. Fortunately, there's not much to do to prepare other than to purchase a large vat of oil, a huge bag of potatos, 10 lbs of onions, and some acne medicine. Ok, I'm kidding about the acne medicine. Sort of.
Preparations for Hanukkah are really awfully simple. Even if you decorate, there isn't much to put up other than some little token decorations. Other than that, you need to clean your Hanukyiot (special Hanukkah menorah with 9 branches instead of 7) if you still have leftover wax from last year like me, buy some new candles, make sure you have enough matches, and some good recipes for latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (donuts). I can help you out there.
How we prepare at our house, where Hanukkah is about as laid back as you can get in a minor holiday, is to cover the sideboard in our dining room with a nice layer of very attractive (hmm) aluminum foil, place the various hanukiyot on the foil, put the boxes of candles on the windowsill beside the sideboard, and scatter the hundreds of dreidels (small tops) amongst the hanukiyot. Voila, instant holiday!
I always purchase large amounts of gelt (chocolate coins wrapped in foil) that I put in a pretty silver bowl in the dining room table. The table has a nice Hanukkah themed blue and white table cloth, with contrasting Hanukkah placemats on top. I always try to find interesting and unusual candles, usually by making the trek to our local Judaica stores conveniently located across the street from each other. Sometimes we make our own beeswax candles with sheets of beesway picked up at Micheals, our local crafts store.
A trip to the grocery store for a large bag of potatos, sweet potatos, onions, a huge bottle or two of vegetable oil, and various staples to make doughnuts, and we're in business. Hanukkah, here we come!
