I've never really "done" Halloween. I mean, I've never really celebrated it. Sure, as a kid we went trick-or-treating, and I think there was one part I went to that the girl just happened to have a Halloween birthday, so it was a costume party. But otherwise, Halloween has just been something to hit the stores afterwards for the candy sales!
But now that my son is here - and getting older, it's occurring to me that this is a really great holiday, with a LOT of potential, for us to celebrate. Since I can't justify spending money hand over fist right now, I'm going to have to start out small. I've got a really cute pumpkin yard decoration, and I'm keeping my eye out for the Halloween/Fall decorations as they go on sale. I've also signed up to host a Halloween party for my local mom's group - a kind of play-date for the kids and a time for us moms to get together and have some grown-up time. I've got cute Halloween plates and napkins, pumpkin and ghost Peeps, and the stuff to decorate cupcakes in the festive orange and black (well, really brown, I'm just going to use chocolate icing.)
One of the things I wanted to do, although this is a little silly since all the kids coming are pretty much toddlers, is have goodie bags for them to take with them. I guess I was thinking like having a little bit of stuff for the moms and a little bit of stuff for the kids. I've got the gift bags and some stickers for the kids, I've got a few Reeses pumpkins, but since a lot of doctors don't recommend giving kids under two peanuts (or peanut butter) those are for the moms. I've also got Smarties for the kids.
But besides the usual candy, I started looking online for some ideas, and found a few neat sites. Here are a few of my favorites.
Tip Junkie has a really good list of Halloween Gift Ideas to check out.
Summertime Designs offers a free scrapbook Halloween kit.
The Shabby Nest has shared some of her great decorating ideas with us - check out the display of "rare Halloween pixies!"
The Gift Ideas Blog offers a list of 8 things you can do or give for the holiday. I liked the idea of going somewhere - they suggested a haunted house - but I think I prefer to check out the local pumpkin patch. (I'm a scared cat!)
So, happy hunting for your Halloween ideas - or if you've got any good ones of your own, please share!
