September is coming to a close and Fall is finally showing it's face. The days aren't as unbearably hot as they have been, and they're getting shorter and shorter. There's a crispness in the air early in the morning and later in the evening that makes it pleasant light-sweater weather. It's kind of sad to see the summer go, but fall is one of my favorite times of year. Allergies and the return of school aside, when the leaves start to change and the weather gets cooler, I can finally enjoy being outside. (I'm a wimp when it comes to being overly hot...)
Not only is it beautiful, but this time of year all the schools and churches are having their Fall Festivals. There are cake walks, bean-bag toss games, and kids running around in costumes. I can't wait until my son is big enough to look forward to participating. I'll never forget some of the costumes my sister and I had growing up. One year she was Oscar the Grouch. My mom covered a cardboad box in silver duc tape and made a wig out of green yarn. We painted her face green and put her in grey pants. It was the cutest homemade costume! Then one year, she was a mermaid. My grandmother made that costume. It was so fitted down the legs to creat the illusion of a tail that she had to waddle instead of walk. There was a cardboard piece shaped like a fin that was was covered in the same material, and the waddle made the tail swish from side to side. I had a princess costume that had ruffles that were meant for curtains as trim. I was SO proud of that dress!
And, of course, with the coming of fall, no one can escape the fact that the "big" holidays are right around the corner. Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to creep up on us even though we know they're merely a few short months away. This year we'll be planning our family get together extra early since we have to accomodate so many in-laws.
So, it may be a few years before my little boy can enjoy some of the fall celebrations that I love so much, but that doesn't mean I can't roll him along with me in his stroller. I'll teach him early of how much fun this season can be.
