One of the typical signs of the season is none other than gingerbread cookies. Better yet, gingerbread houses! I've never been a big fan of gingerbread, I'm more of a chocolate chip cookie person, but thanks to one of the moms at our cookie exchange and one of my husband's co-workers, I think I've been converted.
One of the moms brought a gingerbread cookie that had been half-dipped in white chocolate to our cookie exchange and it was wonderful! They didn't last long at our house. Then, just last night, my husband brought home a few cookies that a co-worker and their family had done for the office. The were thick and soft, and decorated in a really, really cute way with colored icing. The guy told my husband that the cookies were a family tradition for them to make and give out, and that it took about 80 hours total for them to make as many as they do. I can't say that I'm willing to put that kind of time into cookies, but to make a smaller batch I'd be willing to give a little time. I wonder if he'd part with the recipe...
Anyway, gingerbread houses are something else altogether. Although I love baking, I've never made anything like a house, so I'm a little hesitant to try. However, my sister had her two boys make and decorate a house each for Christmas last year from one of those kits. Apparently the kids had great time, and they were cute if for no other reason than because they boys made them, so maybe we'll try it next year.
But, if you're really into gingerbread, you really ought to check out Gingerbread Ninja - a blog that is all about gingerbread. They've got everything from gingerbread neighborhoods to the Nightmare before Christmas gingerbread house. It's amazing! And, it's year-round gingerbread. If you're in need of any ideas, this is the place to go!
Oh, and if you've never made a gingerbread house before, take a hint from Yoga Gumbo - read about their experience here first before you decide to commit!
