I think it's kind of funny that today, September 6th, is "Fight Procastination Day," when just yesterday was "Be Late for Something" day. Considering that I'm kind of known for both, well, I guess both holidays are right up my alley.
When I was growing up, our family friends used to pick our our family and say that we ran on our own time - since we could never seem to show up for anything on time. It became a running joke that if you wanted us to be somewhere at a certain time, you needed to tell us to be there at least a half hour earlier. That trick did work occasionally, but we were still the title-holders for being late. Even now, years later, I can't quite seem to get the hang of timeliness.
I can't help it. Somehow, time just gets away from me. I kid you not, I'll make a lunch date with a friend and pretty much always have to call in to tell them I'm running a little late. It doesn't seem to matter if I give myself an hour and a half to get ready, I am always running out the door at the last possible second. I guess I could blame it on having to get a baby ready, but that really wouldn't fly considering this isn't a recent problem, but rather one I've always had...
My husband is a little better than I am, and personally he hates to be late. He even says that if we're going to be late to church he'd rather not go. (He's had to ammend that statement over the years because we'd pretty much never get there - now he's accepted being a few minutes late.) I guess the problem is, I just can't seem to see the big deal if I'm a few minutes late. I know, I know, that's terribly rude if someone is waiting on you. Maybe it's just a throwback from growing up in a "always running late" family, people just started to expect it from us, so they usually weren't right on time either.
Someone help me break this awful cycle!
So today is a holiday that I can really start to celebrate - or at least take part in. Today I will fight to put aside my procastinating ways. I've even made a little progress. I've been meaning to make my own baby food for weeks - well, ever since my little boy started eating baby food, which is about two months ago. I finally broke down and picked up a good food processor just a few days ago, and today I actually got it out and made some. Hurray for me! I'm so excited to have some made, and I really enjoyed it! Okay, so I turned right around and was a little late for a lunch date, but hey, baby steps!
The Holiday Insights web page says about today:
Today is a day to fight procrastination. Make a decision. Take action. Do it now. Do it today. It may be hard to do. But, you will be glad you did. Now, all you have to do is stop procrastinating and decide to fight procrastination...today!
Since I can't think of a single person I know who doesn't procastinate at something, these two holidays really apply to all of us. To find out just how bad you are, take the online survey at Discovery Health's web site. Obviously its not the end-all-be-all, but it will still give you a little look at how bad your particular style of procastination is. (I scored at 31. Not too bad...except that I started it last night and just finished it this morning. Hey, I got distracted!)
Today I'm making a decision to do better. Instead of getting to the end of each day wondering where my time went, I'm going to make a committment to cross things off of my to-do list. (It's the only way I'll get out from under the mountain of "stuff" I have that needs to be done!) Besides, I have a little somebody who is going to be looking to me for an example of how you're supposed to live - and boy do I NOT want to teach him it's okay to put things off until you're overwhelmed... So I'm going to put down my TV remote and get to it! Like the holiday site (and Mark Twain) says, "Never put of until tomorrow, what you can do today!"
