Eliza Who day?

I was searching online for different May holidays and found one that, although it won't make the calendar, I thought it was well worth pointing out! I grew up watching several old musicals over and over again. I fell in love with them and have had a special place in my heart for them ever since. Although I thought I was well-educated in the world of "older films," I've found over the years that I was extremely limited in my exposure. But, I had to take what came on as reruns on TV. This limited me to the favorites of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Flower Drum Song, The Sound of Music, and of course, My Fair Lady. It's this last one that we celebrate on Sunday.

fairlady_poster.jpg I never would have remembered this on my own, no matter how much I love the movie, but this Sunday, the 20th of May, is unofficially "Eliza Doolittle Day!" If you'll recall, in one of the songs in the movie, Eliza is talking (singing) about how much she hates " 'enry 'iggins" as she calls the doctor (Henry Higgins). Part of the song is:

One day I'll be famous, I'll be proper and prim, Gone to St. James so often I will call it St. Jim. One evening the King will say, "Oh, Liza, old thing,* I want all of England your praises to sing.

Next week on the twentieth of May, da-da-da-da-da-da-DA,
I proclaim Eliza Doolittle Day!

All the people will celebrate the glory of you,
And whatever you wish or want I gladly shall do."
"Thanks a lot, King," says I in a manner well-bred,
"But all I want is 'enry 'iggins 'ead!" dum-da-dum

Okay, so maybe this isn't something to actually celebrate, but when I saw it online I couldn't help but honor the movie by mentioning it. There's just something about the old films - they don't make movies like that any more. Maybe we can celebrate by sitting down with a good bowl of popcorn and some other yummy snacks and watch the movie? Sounds like a good plan to me...
