Egg hunts and candy overload...

What would Easter be without the traditional egg hunt and loads of candy? Seems this is true no matter what your age since it appears that I have either confinscated most of my son's candy and will have to find a way to dispose of it - hopefully that won't result in serious weight gain on my part! (I'm not hearltess, it's just that as a toddler, there's a lot of candy he can't eat yet, like gumballs and hard candies, etc.)

We took him to my parent's church on Easter Sunday for their egg hunt and party. Since it's a rather small church, they don't usually have a lot of kids attending except for special events. The funny thing is that it's usually mostly my family that boosts attendance, which is usually really kind of funny. This year there wasn't that many of my family in attendance, but they still had a good turnout. I can't remember how many eggs they said they had hidden, but each egg had something - candy, a little toy, stickers - in it and there were all sizes and shapes of eggs. There was no way to determine if all the eggs had been found, and the lady in charge actually told me that from previous years they had found some eggs later in the year as they mowed the grass in the church yard! But, there were plenty of eggs and all the kids came away with full baskets.

My daughter happened to be the only little girl there, and as such won a prize for that reason alone! I can't say that the candy bunny meant much to her, but she seemed to like the stuffed ballerina bunny really well - she started chewing on it's ballet slipper immediately!

There were prizes for different things - like who found the most eggs and who found an egg decorated like a sports ball - and all the kids got to pick out a prize or two. They had a blast. Oh, and I'm sure the cookies and juice didn't hurt!

Later at my grandmother's house, we all gathered for the traditional family Easter lunch. While the adults visited inside, the older kids had taken over the role of hiding the eggs for the younger ones. It's kind of funny and sad at the same time - I remember being the one standing anxiously at the door, waiting for the "okay" to go find the eggs hiding outside. It's nice to see my own kids out there finding eggs in the bushes and drainspouts that I came to expect to have an egg hidden inside over the years.

The first go-round the eggs actually had candy in them. Someone helped my son empty all the candy out of his eggs and it wasn't until we were home later that I realized that I had left the bag of candy on the counter at my grandmother's house. Oops. Seriously - I didn't mean to, but I have to admit I'm not heartbroken to have a little less candy in the house. The sad part of it is that we haven't even given him his Easter basket yet. I know, I know, that sounds really bad of us, but consider this: Saturday night wasn't really Easter so we wanted to wait until Sunday. Sunday morning my husband slept in and I took the kids to my parent's church, so I didn't want to do it without him (this also turned out to be good since they had candy at the church party!) Then we had lunch at my grandmothers, and afterwards we went home and it was immediately naptime. When we got him up, it was obvious he wasn't well, and we've been dealing with croup/a cold all week long, so again, candy = bad idea.

So, here we are the weekend after Easter weekend and he still has - count them - not one, not two, but THREE Easter baskets coming to him. Yep. Three. The one I've made up for him, one from my parents, and one that's coming with his grandparents from NC the next time they come to visit. One things for sure, this kid isn't hurting for candy!
