Don't get your feathers ruffled!

Or, I could say, "don't get your panties all in a knot!" Keep your sense of humor!

Considering we started the month off with April Fool's Day, it only makes sense that April would be "National Humor Month." In a world where life is often too serious, it's too bad we don't hear more about this oddball holiday. Created 32 years ago this year by Larry Wilde, this month is "designed to heighten public awareness on how the joy and therapeutic value of laughter can improve health, boost morale, increase communication skills and enrich the quality of one's life." Heck, even science is not proving that laughter can have healing effects, and they're even saying that "the curative power of laughter and its ability to relieve debilitating stress and burnout may indeed be one of the great medical discoveries of our times." What good medicine!

Wilde is not only a best-selling humorist (and author of 53 books on what else - humor) but he's also the founder of The Carmel Institute of Humor. Having been "in the business" of humor for so long, he's got some pretty good ideas to help keep your stress down and your health up. Need a release from all the craziness in your life? Try his 3-step "Humor RX for Stress."

If that doesn't do it for you, maybe you could adopt his 11 Commandments for Lighthearted Living:

  1. Thou shalt make up your mind that no matter what happens you're going to be a happy person. If you're not having fun, FAKE IT.
  2. Thou shalt start the day with a smile by reading something funny. Skip the stress of listening to the news.
  3. Thou shalt keep smiling! It makes people wonder what you've been up to.
  4. If thou meetist someone who hasn't got a smile, give them yours.
  5. Laugh at your dumb mistakes before others have a chance to.
  6. Laugh with your spouse and your marriage will improve with age.
  7. Laugh with your kids and they'll never stop loving you.
  8. Thou shalt not laugh with your relatives -- it will encourage them to borrow money.
  9. Thou shalt not talk on thy cell phone while standing on line at the Post Office.
  10. Don't give up. Moses was once a basket case.
  11. AND remember: Angels fly because they take themselves lightly.

Enjoy National Humor month - and don't forget to laugh!
