Don't let this Sunday sneak up on you! This Sunday is Grandparent's Day - something that' particularly more important to our family as the years go by and the grandkids have made their presence known in the family. My parents have had two grandsons before my son came along, but now both of their daughters have children to celebrate Grandparent's Day with. The grandparents on my husband's side of the family is a different story. Our son makes the first grandchild for either of them - they're a typical American family - his parents are divorced and both remarried, which means my son has two sets of grandparents on that side.
Not only do we finally have a child of our own to celebrate Grandparent's Day, but we are also expecting our second - this one supposedly a daughter - which makes the first granddaughter for any of the grandparents! So you can imagine the excitement for all of us. (On of my in-laws in particular, but that's a different story!)
Since most of the grandparents live so far away, I'm afraid we'll have to celebrate the holiday for them by sending a card with photos and maybe, if my son behaves and cooperates, a little scribble by him. However, since the holiday falls on a Sunday and my family traditionally has lunch after church anyway, I expect that we'll have a big family lunch to celebrate the day. Knowing my sister, once I make sure she remembers what the day celebrates, she'll come up with some great homemade craft for them that her kids can take part in to show their love! She's also recently started cross-stitching, so maybe there will be a little something from her as well.
One of my big ideas for this holiday is stepping stones for my parents. (Sorry out-of-town grandparents, they're just too big and heavy to mail!) My mom and dad are really big on water gardens. They have a small pond in their back yard that my dad has lovingly tended for years now. They've finally decided that the pond just isn't big enough for what the want, and isn't really even located where they want it to be. So, they've rented a bobcat, dug a bigger hole in the side yard, and have begun the project of creating a deeper pond that they can even have a waterfall-like feature so they can enjoy the sound of water splashing.
One of the things they want to do is to line the sides of the pond with stones. I'm hoping that I can purchase a stepping stone kit from our local craft store, mix it up, and have my son at least step in it so I can have his footprints in it for them to have around their pond. Maybe I can talk my sister into doing the same - if we can make this a tradition, they'll have one of the kids footprints each year as they grow. Personally, this is something I'd like to do for myself to have just throughout our yard! I think it's a great way to preserve memories of your kids younger years. I'm finding out first hand just how quickly they grow up!
However you decide to celebrate your grandparents, don't let the holiday slip by. Grandparents are a big part of most kids lives growing up. I know mine sure have a great role in my past, and still have a huge place in my heart! Don't let the holiday pass by without taking the opportunity to let them know how much you love and appreciate them!
