Counting down til New Year's

NYEBigBall.jpg Although I’ve grown up knowing that watching the ball drop in New York City’s Time Square is one of the biggest symbols of New Year’s Eve, I’ve never tuned in early enough to catch the whole show. Color me uninformed – I never realized what a huge show it really is! I checked out the Times Square Alliance’s web site for the full rundown of what really goes on for New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

Seems like, between the music, the cheerleaders, the handouts and the pyrotechnics, that I’ve been missing out by not catching the whole show. Granted, I’d never want to be in the middle of the crowd, especially in the cold, but it sounds like an experience. This year some of the big-name performers will be Toni Braxton, P.O.D., Rascal Flatts, and Christina Aguilera.

Officially starting at 5 PM, the surrounding streets are completely closed to traffic. Giant video screens (courtesy of Target) count down each hour and they are accompanied by “special sound, lighting, confetti, and pyrotechnic effects.”

The crazy thing is that the whole event is planned minute to minute. I guess it would have to be to go off without a hitch, but the schedule online actually shows from 6:00-6:06 such and such happens and from 6:07-6:22 something else happens, and so on. Pretty neat. I wonder how close to their anticipated schedule they really can keep things...
