Today's holidays (in addition to Babbling Day) celebrate counting buttons and cheesecake! Okay, as much as it sounds like a really strange and weird holiday to count buttons, I do have to say that it's not a bad idea. Okay, maybe not for an actual holiday, but the idea still is sound. Case in point: I was getting dressed the other day, didn't have time for a wardrobe change, but found out as I was rushing to get ready that I was missing a button. Not just any bottom or cuff button, but one right at a critical point in the shirt - yep, right at mid-chest. Now, a man may be able to get away with this, but as a woman, not so much.
So, the point here is, if I'd taken the time previously to make sure my clothes had all the necessary buttons, I wouldn't have run out of the house in a shirt with a safety pin precariously placed, hoping that no one would notice. The good news is that no one said anything, but who knows, maybe they were just being polite. There are various other examples of this, and I'm sure we've all had something like this happen before. My other favorite scenarios are when I forgot that a button was loose and it popped off at an inopportune moment because I'd forgotten to take the time to re-fasten it or when I'm doing laundry and find that my husband has lost a button off of his shirt of pants and said button has gotten separated from said pants or shirt. Then it's not just an issue of replacing it, but finding a button that actually matches. Do you know what a headache that is!?
Okay, off that soapbox. Let's talk about the other, more fun, holiday today! Pumpkin Cheesecake! So, I'm not a big fan of much pumpkin stuff. Maybe because my husband's mom makes this Pumpkin Chiffon Pie that, try as I might, I CANNOT reproduce. I suppose my first mistake it trying in the first place. Isn't it one of the cardinal rules for daughters-in-laws to not even TRY to do something the same as or better than their mother-in-law? Well, anyway, the few times I have tried it, it either didn't turn out well or my husband just didn't eat it - not because it was bad, but more so because he has such ingrained, wonderful memories of it from his childhood that he doesn't want to ruin them with a potentially mediocre Pumpkin Chiffon Pie. So the bottom line is that I've told him I'm done trying - I refuse to make it any more. And once he realized that he wasn't even eating it, he's okay with it!
But, there is one Pumpkin Cheesecake that we both look forward to each fall. Olive Garden has a seasonal dessert they offer only in the fall - it's their own Pumpkin Cheesecake. My husband LOVES it, and even I have to admit it smells pretty yummy. Yes, I admit, I've never actually tried it myself, but hey, in my mind, you can't beat their Black Tie Mousse Cake. The reason I look forward to it so much is 1-he loves it so much, and 2-it means I'm not eating dessert by myself!
So enjoy the fall and the abundance of pumpkins! Have fun counting your buttons and enjoy some Pumpkin Cheesecake, homemade or store bought!
