Commemorating the music

Today, February 3rd, marks the anniversary of the day singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash in 1959. Today is The Day the Music Died. It was a tragic loss for their family and their fans alike, and one of the biggest commemorations of the tragedy is a song written over ten years afterward the crash.

The fact that most people are familiar with the song American Pie tells you what kid of an impact it has had on culture in general. Don McLean said about his song, “The song was written as my attempt at an epic song about America, and I used the imagery of music and politics to do that. Also, I was really influenced by the Sgt. Pepper album, and the American Pie album was my attempt to do that, but the song totally overshadowed the album.”
