You know the song “Christmas Shoes” by Newsong? Even if you don’t recognize the title, I bet you’ve heard it. A favorite at Christmas time, you hear it everywhere. It’s so popular, in fact, that I have a kind of a love-hate opinion of it. Sometimes when it comes on the radio I turn it immediately because I just can’t listen to it one more time. Other times I listen to it and get teary-eyed. I know, I can’t help it, I’m a sap!
Anyway, the point to all this, is now there’s a movie based on the song. The song came out in 2000, a book was released in 2001, and now CBS is putting out a made-for-tv movie based on the same story.
If you’re really unfamiliar with the song, the story behind it is that a man waiting in line at a store gets behind a little boy. The boy is dirty and alone, but he has a pair of shoes to
purchase. The man isn’t in the Christmas mood, but he overhears the little boy telling the cashier that he’s buying the shoes for his mother, who is sick and isn’t going to live much longer. He wants to buy the shoes for her so that she’ll be beautiful for Jesus when she goes to heaven.
As the little boy is paying, he realizes he doesn’t have enough money. Touched by the little boy’s situation, the man helps him by paying the difference, and the little boy runs off. After this experience, the man realizes that he’s let the true meaning of Christmas escape him, and he comes to appreciate his own situation better.
In the CBS movie, staring Rob Lowe as the man, Max Morrow as the little boy, and Kimberly Williams as the mother of the little boy, the story plays out pretty much the same. It’s sure to be a tear-jerker. I know that made-for-tv movies usually get a bad wrap, but I think this one might actually be pretty good.
Check out the home page on CBS’s web site for more info on the movie, and a full background on the song. Pretty incredible. Apparently when it first aired, one radio station was practically shut down for hours with phone calls that poured in from people who were touched by the song. If that’s any indication, the movie will become a Christmas favorite as well!
