Christmas may be over, but you can still give

Christmas has past and most of us are glad that the hectic gift-buying part of the holiday season is over. But wait, there may be at least one more gift to give. This gift doesn't require any shopping on your part, and it doesn't even require any forethought about what the right item may be. What am I talking about anyway?

January is National Blood Donor Month. Following the official season of peace on earth and goodwill toward our fellow man, it would stand to reason that we'd still be of the mindset to help out - so why not? It only take a little bit of our time, and hey, they usually provide juice and cookies to you afterward, so it's a win-win situation!

People nationwide benefit from the blood banks each year, and without donors, there wouldn't be the supply to help those in need. "According to the American Association of Blood Banks, now known as AABB, in the United States every day, “approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident victims.”" Donors are asked to give as often as they are willing, which the guidelines say is every 8 weeks. Donated blood only has a shelf-life of 42 days (now there's something I didn't know), so new blood is constantly needed to fulfill the need.

So take advantage of the chance to give the gift of life. It doesn't cost you anything but time, and it's worth the price!
