I always have the best intentions at Christmas – homemade gifts, baking, being ready for Christmas before the last minute rush… But somehow I never quite make it. Even when I do start my Christmas shopping early, the trend never seems to stick and I still find myself at the last minute struggling to finish in time.
It’s funny, even now I’m seeing ads on TV and getting the spam in my inbox about “there’s still time” to have something delivered for Christmas. I wonder how much that instant delivery costs… There always seems to be that specific someone(s) on my list that is just a pain to buy for. This year it’s my brother-in-law. He’s just turned 20 and hasn’t asked for anything at all. He’s out of town, which makes it even harder since we don’t see him a lot and don’t know his tastes very well. Then there’s those people who it seems like every time I go into a store I see something that says “buy me for so-and-so!” I’ve had to make and keep a strict list of who I need to buy for and what I’ve got them so I don’t overdo it for one person and completely forget another.
This year, we’re also going out of town to spend Christmas with family. The family that we’ll be spending the week with are people I don’t know very well, which falls into the “hard to buy for” category. I decided to be creative and make gifts for all the ladies, all the same of course, and we cheated by getting all the guys the same gift. Since there are only three children, that made their shopping a little easier.
Yet, even now as I sit and think about all the things I absolutely HAVE to get done before we leave town on Saturday, I can’t help but think about the things I want to do that aren’t necessary. I have a stack of papers here beside me, a few of which are recipes that I wanted to try. I have the ingredients for cookies and even cute little bags to put them in for my co-workers. Forget the fact that I’ve taken tomorrow off and won’t see them until after the holiday, I wanted to make them cookies!
I have unfinished Christmas gifts, one for my mother and one for my sister-in-law sitting her on the couch and coffee table, and still I can’t seem to start on either of them. Maybe it’s because I know that I won’t be seeing my mother until after Christmas and I have a 6-hour car ride to finish my sister-in-law’s gift. I think I need a holiday coach to get me motivated and going in the right direction. Either that or a vacation. Oh wait, that’s what I’m doing starting tomorrow… Well, at least I have a full day all to myself to get some of this stuff done. Now if I could just focus and actually do it instead of sleeping in and spending my day getting sidetracked.
