Celebrate your siblings!

Today is National Siblings Day! Okay, so technically it hasn't been appointed as a National holiday, but it has still been recognized and even "supported" by 22 state governors and even Clinton when he was president. That should count for something, right?

I've often taken my "sibling" - my sister - for granted. They've always been there. You don't think of them ever NOT being there. National Siblings Day was founded by a woman who lost her siblings tragically. That's kind of hard for me to think about for several reasons. First of all, my sister drives me nuts. There's no denying it, but I know she'd say the same thing about me. Regardless of that, we love each other fiercely and would do anything we could to help or protect each other. Also, she's got two great kids and a pretty great husband who would be lost without her.

Also, now that I'm married, I have several siblings-in-law as well. They've all been great additions to my family and I'm so glad to have them. Blood-related or not, they're worth celebrating. My sister-in-law just got married over Christmas this past year (2007) and made the family bigger by adding a husband and his family. My brother-in-law just got married this past weekend - also adding to the family! My third brother-in-law has yet to tie the knot, but there's no rush for that!

There's even a site specifically for Siblings Day - and it brings up an interesting thing about siblings. It's kind of one of those things that you know, but you just don't really think about it. The site mentions how our siblings are a permanent part of our past. They alone, better than any of our friends, will remember us in our childhood and give us a window back to who we were back when. My sister may be four year younger than me, and we may not have been in the same class at school or had many of the same friends, but she can reflect back with me on the years we spent growing up. That's something special to share with someone.

With todays families being what they are, it's harder to stay in touch. My siblings-in-law are special to me, but they live in Texas, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, so I have a pretty good idea that we won't be spending a lot of time bonding. But my sister, even living across town as she does, even if she moves across country, will always share those first 18 years of my life. We can't get away from one another if we wanted to!

According to their site, April 10th has been designated Siblings Day in 31 states. Meant to be celebrated in the same way Mother's Day or Father's Day is, the Sibling's Day Foundation is still working to have it proclaimed a National holiday.
